Ang aking payo sa mga baguhan - bigyan pansin ang mga tutorials na kasama sa installation ng 3dsmax ninyo. Marami sa atin ang kinaliligtaan ang pagsilip nito - but you are missing quite a lot if you don't spend time and work out the tutorials. It will be your foundation.

When I was starting with 3dstudio and later, 3dsmax in late 1996, we did not have the luxury of abundant online tuts - much to say internet then was like a chuchu train travelling at the speed of darkness...

What I found very helpful in getting used to the software was the helpfiles and trying out all the modifiers in the stack unto a simple object like a box or a sphere. This gave me an introduction as to what the particular modifier was about or in what situation it could be used.

Do not disregard the help files or the default tutorials - they're there for a reason you know!

Since I am not born an architect and I could only imagine the word ridge or column from my own understanding, could you post a picture? As I always say, there are a million ways to do the same thing in max, and it would be difficult to visualize something and come up with a quick way to model without actually knowing its shape.

One technique to model something that might be organic or symmetrical in shape is to find areas in the object that could be mirrored. I tend to rotate the object and look for views that I could use as an axis for arrays, symmetry or mirroring.

For example, old roman columns might be repetitions of the same object or corner if viewed from the top view. You might need to spend a few minutes modelling a single source shape using common techniques (for organically shaped - obejcts I tend to use Spline modeling - surface tools, cross section, etc). Once you have a source shape, you can then apply a symmetry mod to copy/weld them from various axes.

I know cray is just demonstrating, but this is too much - Usually one or two chamfers will be enough. Just make sure that it is properly smoothen out.

If I may add my .2 cents doon sa corner/edge smoothing.

In case lang you are using Mental Ray as your renderer... If not, you can ignore this post Smile

Merong feature ang Arch+Viz material ng MR to mimmic the looks of chamfered corners.
It is called "Rounded Corners". It is just a rendering trick to simulate the looks of chamfered corners, like the example above.
Minsan kasi, kung hindi malapit ang objects sa camera, we dont really have to "invest" on more polygons for this purpose. It means magaan sa rendering.

Nasa sa office po ako ngayon, so I cannot post some screenies to show it Smile
I'll try mamaya if I have the time Smile

Vray has the same and you can actually do it via scanline with a simple, face mapped outline on the edges as bumps though not as thorough as vray's or mr's.

But it isn't "modeling" really, it's more of a rendering hack which is fine btw for objects in the backgrounds.

The only caveat is that the technique is renderer-specific, meaning you'll lose the property if you are handing out models to another artist using an entirely different 3d application.
