Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
First topic message reminder :
I would like to start a WIP on how to make photorealistic architectural visualizations using any available techniques imaginable. There are a couple of works I had seen that are very hard to distinguish from actual photos. Making these renders to look so believable has already become an art in itself.
I chose the Farnsworth house because there are a lot of very nice renders of it and photographs to compare with. The model of the house I am using was made by Peter Guthrie and it can be downloaded from his blog. My heartfelt thanks to him for sharing such a wonderful detailed model. He made a number of very realistic visualizations using the same model.
At the moment I'm using Sketchup, indigo renderer, GIMP and Motiva Real Camera. I maybe switching to other software packages if necessary.
Some initial renderings, I prepared yesterday:

Really cool updates.I like the level of realism especially the last ones. Parang fry and maxwell ang dating.Unbiased. How about rendering time sir?Is it worth it?
About onyx, the polygon control comes right away. You can set the segments while generating the trees and thats really awesome about this plug in. You can control the leaves, barks and trunks segments and there's variety of directions and look.
But the drawback is its uses opacity maps for the leaves. They are not modeled which limits you to add shell modifier for thickness and better sss mat shaders. Anyway thanks for sharing with us. Just keep us posted..

Maraming salamat Sir! For one thing rendering times are infinitely long. Yung mga latest images ko dito average 20 hrs. render time. (I'm using windows xp 32 bit on a Core2 quad 2.3Ghz w/ 3gb ram) Actually indigo renderer has an infinite render time. It would keep on rendering until all image noise has been canceled out or as they say 'converged'. Anyway, since I'm not in a hurry I just leave to computer to render overnight, leave it in the morning as I head for work and return in the evenings.
One good thing I like about indigo is the ability to also produce an almost infinite number of combinations from one rendered image. If scene is set up properly and each light source is assigned a layer, different images with different time of day can be taken from one render. This light 'layers' in indigo are very similar to autocad layers. This is done while rendering and just save the desired image as jpg or png. After that, you can compose another combination.
It's on the beta testing now and if it lives up to its promise of 50x faster, the 20 hr render time would be shortened to 24 minutes.
I will resume working on these Onyx trees. I think part of the reason why I am getting huge files is the way sketchup imports .3ds files. It treats each leaf on the tree as an individual 3d object and not a block. I found out about this when I edited the shape of one leaf. The rest of the leaves did not update. With this discovery along with lowering the poly count, I'm planning to import only the tree trunks and branches and have these populated with leaves inside sketchup.
Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
I did a test rendering of the house at bird's eye view and also included another batch re-rendered scenes.
Render Settings
Just wanted to share the settings na ginagamit ko para mga scenes dito. (daytime and evening scenes)
Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
The outputs are good, mas madali ba siyang matutunan, as compared to vray or podium?
Thanks for the screen caps, it helps us understand the software even more.

Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
few questions, just for clarification:
- trees are pure onyx?
- for grass did you use, "AUTOGRASS" as plugin or you modelled everything and instanced?, kc ok un variation sa mga huling renders.
- for PostWork, "PICASSA" no Adobe PS?
your visuals are really interesting, keep it up sir.

Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
@ anthony_als - thank you Sir!
Regarding the trees, I am still using Sketchup trees. I encountered some issues with trees made in onyx after importing them inside sketchup.
PS was not used yet. Yung mga color variations and tone, brightness, etc. ng mga render ko ay ginagawa ko within the rendering software.

Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
Some updates on the progress of work.
Notable changes:
1. The 3d trees are now much bigger & closer to the house and the foliage is also thicker than before.
2. The pine trees have been taken out in order to be consistent with the reference images. These were replaced with maple trees.

I like the way you progress on this dude, kasama pa ang sharing.

Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
wow, very realistic set sir canadium!!! I like the mood, perfect render ito! my only comment is the steps, I think you can adjust either the model itself or the ground to touch the last step... thank for the link to the model resource btw...
hehe sensya na po about the stairs, kung ganun talaga yun, di pa rin ako convinced...

I think the model is correct dude, kulang talaga ng isang step yan, and design intent ata din yan..
Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
Thats correct, 4 steps. See the the real photo at Galaites link given. The issue here is the ground is lower compared to reality.
Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
hehe sabi ko din, the model is quite high... it should at least look like it touches the ground, or at least one step higher only.
thanks for the reference sir galaites, that clarifies it.

klaro na dude, mataas lang ung structure...

yeah right, ang intention kase nyan is dapat may naka umbok na ground part dun sa ilalim ng supposed to be missing stair step... nag magsisilbing step na din...

Maraming salamat Sir!

Thank you Sir.

Re: Arch Viz Study - The Farnsworth House (Updates with settings)
Some updates on the work. These were prepared before I read all the comments regarding the stair. Another batch of renders is still being rendered at the moment. These may be posted tomorrow.
Some notable changes:
1. The only major change I made here is ginawa kong mas mataas ang araw. Doon sa mga na-post ko kahapon ay parang bitin dahil yung bandang itaas lang ng mga puno ang nasisikatan ng araw tapos, the rest of the scene is shaded from sunlight.
2. added some early evening scenes. The light emitters inside the lamps are disabled to save on render time.
