What kind of CG Artist are you??
I just saw this thread in the other forum and just want to have it also here in CGP..Thanks guys!
What kind of CG Artist are you??
One that articulates and stays true to detail in the Model (Pre Rendering), or
One that corrects everything in a photoshop (Post Rendering), or
A little of both?

Naalala ko nanay ko, she used to say, - "Anong klase kang anak??!!!!"
Perhaps it was a question about your style is, di ba Architek?
Well I am mixture of this and that - work only on what the camera sees. Its a stupid thing (aray!) to spend time modeling or texturing a banyan tree when all you'll see in the final render is a single pixel - well there is no such thing as a single pixel tree. Lets make that 128 X 128.

sooner or later my hands won't be able to push the keys, move the mouse, or sketch with a pen. my eyes moreover can't keep up to the lcd for very long. time to think of an exit plan.... i'd be the most lousiest slacker in the CG industry.

Re: What kind of CG Artist are you??
nice thread...
one who tries to make do with whatever machine is available, and who find ways in coming up with relatively acceptable images, even if the machine used is not at par with that of the standards. It may be by:
1. not modeling everything, only those that can be seen on camera (like what sir vertex said).
2. messing up with the render engine settings to make it work faster on slower machines, but still get a good looking, image.
3. If all else fails, cheats are available via Photoshop.

A slave CG Artist. Using all what i learned and trying to learn at the same time in-order to survive..
Re: What kind of CG Artist are you??
...i like this one sir jeff...
...well, i'm a cg artist (accidental!) who uses a bit of both...lacking of time means post productions ( before )...
...but nowadays, trends ( Chromatic aberrations, Bokeh, DOF's, Lens Effects, etc...) are into post production...
...so for the sake learning, i uses both...but i wouldn't call it "cheating" nor "correcting", maybe enhancing...after all, what matters most are the images you produced exactly at a given time...

nice thread.
I can't be a CG Artist in one way...but I can tell who I am....
"An artist that satisfy the needs and wants of my clients, not perfectly but at least I shared my talent wittingly"

Re: What kind of CG Artist are you??
Nice thread:
I'm a realist, yet fantasy driven artist... so sa CG I'm mostlly 2D but 3D is a tool for me too. I use it to enhance but I edit it heavilly in 2D apps.
So I'm a mixed CG artist! ang gulo!

You will always be a dreamer if you remain a dreamer. Don't dream - realize it.
I've been trying to figure out a good answer about the original topic so I realized that I could probably sum it this way:
I start from the total reverse, start at the end.
Like Skycraper - visualize what the end should be. And then go back from there.
This will allow you to consider what tools should be needed, what techniques should be employed or what approach should be put beforehand. Sometimes most of those who work on linear fashion - and I don not say all of them, tend to get overwhelmed and get carried away by the flow, putting much effort on something that won't be of any use, sometimes often forgetting what the original goals where. And then at the end, realizing that the road taken was a 180 degree away too late from what was supposed to be the destination.

I totally agree with vertex. It takes me 2 days to think on a subject sometimes and work on it for two hours. Exaggerated but that's how I wanted to state the facts of thinking first before doing an action. It's also called careful planning.

Re: What kind of CG Artist are you??
Thanks peeps! With Christine's (este!) Arkitektura's permission - I'd like to make a twist to the topic. Because we can go on and on talk about what people do (and I'd just sound like vertex is the holy grail!) and end up learning nothing. It will be like a one man sumo...
I wish that we could align the discussion into something like - What kind of an artist should we be?
Whatdyathinku?

Re: What kind of CG Artist are you??
take ii
i am an old (school) CG artist.
old school - when i started i had to endure tools not as advanced as today (3ds for DOS running on 4Mb [yes, MEGA BYTES] RAM and 386 DX machines (running on megahertz of processing, not gigahertz) running w a math co processor, 120 Mb [yes again, MEGABYTES] harddisk and 3.5" floppy disc installers, no google, no aversis, no evermotion, no internet, no cellphone, etc etc). in fact, "giga" in bytes and hertz was unheard of.
old school - i had to learn things slowly, by meeting w friends during lunch breaks, unlike today where artists can become a 3ds max afficionado overnight by simply hanging out in the forums, or chatting with a CG friend 24/7.
old school - for us to produce 1 render we had to really optimize the models and streamline the process so that we can cut our render times from 2 hours to say, 1 hour in scanline. and the maximum resolution that we get is usually up to 1024x768 only.
i envy this generation! it's an exciting time for CG. things have been easy for them, and it is amazing to see the talent that emerges in only the first few renders. in my case, being old school - there is one thing that those limitations in technology has forced me to learn, and it's optimization.

Re: What kind of CG Artist are you??
Talk about cg in the old days - gee that's nostalgic, I remember faking raytraced reflections by mirroring the same object.
I'm also with kabute on this one. Its always easier to learn cg nowadays but optimization is skill one can only learn thru experience.
