my ARCHITECTURAL THESIS project 2009

First topic message reminder :

Welcome CGPinoy, This is my Thesis Project, entitled "PARKOUR WORLD", traceurs' playground. you can play the attached video below for more ideas about parkour.
Unfortunately my jurors gave me 3.0 here. pero most importantly nakapasa na kaya masaya nako!. bwahehehe! I used 3dsmax 2008, vray, photoshop cs3 for image stitching. 1 month project pla. makakapagparty na sa wakas!

si Dean, Nick Ramos, and Micu. Ust karin right?? sobrang dami nilang binabagsak nga eh, I think theres a sudden change about their standards ngayon eh, sobra kakainis. sabagay ur right tapos na lahat ang paghihirap makakapagenjoy na sa wakas! congrats din sir!!!

sir ang galing ng thesis mo ..pano ang pagkarender nito sir buo ba ito ..panu ung stitching at anu un sir?? snsya na curious.. naku best in thesis dapat ito... insecure lang mga jury mo kasi d nila nagawa yan ng panahon nila..

about nman sa project mo .unique talaga sya .naii2sip ko pano ung safety nila tsaka mga legal issues ..kase parkour is parang urban ninja yan e ..
naalala ko si david belle dito ung sa b13 sir . sa bansa nila kahit saan kasi nagsisitalon sila ... idol na kita sir .. sustainable ung project niyo sir .ayus ... party na ehe

saan ba to sa pinas?, may study kanaba sa mga target market mo? alam mo ba kung ilang pinoy lang ang aware sa parkour?, panget bro palitan mo..., baka pag itinayu yan 1 month lang mag reformat agad baka iconvert sa boom na boom

no doubt malupet ang concept ang design.... bilib na bilib ako....
sa opinyon ko di nga po sya ganun ka feasible pagdating sa bussiness aspect.... may crisis pa naman ngayon.... siguro yun po ang ibig ninyong sabihin... i agree with sir johnny....

on second thought pasado naman yung libro nya....
malay natin marami ding nagp2rkour sa pilipinas di lang po tayo aware kasi di natin ginagawa... hehe

sir tnx po, hindi ko pa cya nirender ng buo, kasi hindi kakayanin ng pc, part by part ko po cyang nirender, first yung site and terrain, tapos yung mga building, and last yung mga landscapes, save ko cla as png images tapos pagkabit kabitin nalang sa photoshop. yan nalang po yung last resort ko sa very rush hour na natitira. hahaha naku hindi naman po sguro insecure haha.
yung safety ang legal issues po yung napakahirap po talagang idefend. yup! nakakaadik nga panuorin sila david belle and friends! tnx po ulit!

opo sir johnybegood, 1st sem po kasi which is yung book, dami ko talagang nilusutang consultation and pumasa naman yung mga studies, actually super research po tlaga yung kaylangan ko dito. Naginterview pa po ako ng mga traceurs dito sa pinas, marami din po akong nadiscover na mga organizations na maraming members. haha hindi ko na po mapapalitan yan, tapos ndin po kasi, at kung papaulitin naman, hindi ko na po uulitin, dyan ako nangangayayat. theoretical design naman din po yan kaya small chance na itayo cya sa pinas, haha. tnx po sa inyo!

yup!! opo, i tried it once lang together with my friends somewhere in marikina village yata. kaso talagang parkour lang, not free running, kasi po may distinction po cla eh, may mga flips po yung free running. kasi naman po hindi ako marunong magflips kaya hanggang talon talon lang kami, haha Its very cool talaga. parang ang astig mo, para lang. hahaha tnx po ulit!

I will not comment on the rendering aside from the fact that for a arch. student, it is a pretty good effort. 

As for the thesis itself.... unfortunately I see a lot of flaws. I will not go into details as the thesis is already over. The only reason I am mentioning this is because some posters here have mentioned that this did not deserve a 3.0 but a higher grade. I have to disagree with that, however I do not put all fault on the student but more on the system itself. For one, better guidance from the teachers should have been given here and this thesis should not have reached this result. But what can you do when a design class is UST has 50+ students......

BTW, I used to be a lecturer in UST, I taught for 2 years, design classes, design theory, research methods and also sat as a juror for a few thesis deliberations. That was back in 1998-2000 I think, it was a long time ago so I am not 100% sure on the dates.

sa thesis kase tinitignan jan is hindi lang ganda ng design and proposal, kelangan feasible, in short sa totoong buhay pwede at papatok pag itinayo, and for longtime stay, not a risk, na hindi luge ang owner. shempre kaya sila mag invest ng project is para kumita rin sila. sa ganyan project kase right now hindi sya papatok pa kase its not a popular sport here na madaming mag try, and it will take years or months to learn this, so kokonti talaga ang mag benefit nyan, sa ibang country na popular papatok ang project na yan.sa thesis very critical is the proposal pa lang dapat maganda at very feasible,winners ang users and owners, and the proposal project is not a risk, but a business that caters to the needs of its environment, yun ang usually nkakauha ng matataas na grades, but anyway congratulations sa pag pasa mo painom ka na.

I sort of agree and at the same time disagree. I know a lot of Architecture schools in the Philippines have this requirement for thesis projects that the project has to be financially feasible, some even ask for ROI (return on investment), etc. etc. Even though "some" financial constraints, design practicality and common sense are needed in a thesis, I "personally" think that this way of thinking is not correct. The reason is because this results in the thesis student focusing too much on the financial viability of the project rather than the design, which in the real world, is not really our job (to a point). In the real world, the developer does all the number crunching, feasibility studies, financial planning, etc. Also there are some projects that do not need to be financially viable, buildings like churches, museums, government buildings, do not need to turn a profit. 

Anyway, getting back to the renderings, as I said, quite impressive for a student. The reason why I would not give a high grade for this thesis is because I believe it did not address the design problems in an effective manner. From little of what I see, this is a Parkour Park / Center. Without getting too much into detail, I believe that the design itself is not an effective solution just because of the fact that the scale and design of the parkour platforms are not that well suited for parkour.

Doing a quick Google Image search for "Parkour Park" you can see the existing facilities that are being used in the real world by parkour enthusiasts.  The scale is much smaller and the platforms more random like in the example below. 



I would not give you a low grade because I think this facility would not make money, I personally do not believe in that train of thought. I would not give you a high grade because your design solution does not adequately address the design problem of your project.
