Actually that's AO via materials. Remeber to use self illumination if all u need is an ao pass.
Another way to mimic AO is to use a dome light at 1 intensity...

AO can be adjusted in post editing for easy tweaks... simply make a duplication of your final scene setup to a different name and don't forget to include in a filename???_AO when doing so. neat and organize...
after saving, click aand select all your objects in the scene and click a vacant material in the material editor slot and drag it over the selected object in the scene (making all objects turns to gray, right..??!!) tick on diffuse map and select ambient occlusion and mental ray as your renderer. and hit RENDER... save the AO information as tga or tiff format. fire up your photoshop or AE programs, on your first layer as final rendered scene image then load the second layer as AO image. place the layered _AO on top of the first layer and select multiply mode.... and adjust the shades by moving the opacity slider....to your mood...
hope it also helps

no need to select all materials bro, just use the materials override both in vray mental ray.
