Siem Reap Journal
1- There are plenty of Angkor Wat photographs taken on a sunrise/sunset at the front gate. Our approach was based on Architect Mun Summ's (WOHA) suggestion to shoot it from the east side. The pinnacles appearing here like 'golden' as it was the first to catch the sunlight while the podium is being deprived by huge raintrees set back at about 20metres from the wall.

tks Bokkins! just got back and will post more images. hope you'll enjoy them as well as i enjoy shooting.
2- Here's another shot when the sun was a bit higher and not obscured by thin clouds as in #1. This temple was built as a dedication to the Hindu god-Vishnu. The three-tiered pyramids are amazingly spectacular. However during the ravages of war and looting, some of the beehive-like towers (left and right) are no longer complete. Surprisingly, have not seen a single tourist from India (seat of Hindu religion) as their temples are far inferior to the Angkor Wat--so much comparable to the ancient pyramids of Egypt.

3- The 'bas-reliefs' with gods and demons depicted on the south gallery. Shown is a Khmer temple guard roaming around the temple. Notice his amputated limb, might be a victim of land mines still scattered around the area.

4a- A closer look at the towers. Here is framed by 'serpent of naga' balustrades. Part of the destruction was also caused by lightning.

4b- More close-up. Notice that they already installed lightining arrestors.

yup, he's a victim of landmine. till now, thousands of landmines are still planted all over and they advise tourist to stay within cleared areas.

8- Bright touches of color remain on the pillars and the ceiling of the cruciform passageway connecting the first and second galleries, allowing us a glimpse of the brilliance of the structure at the height of Angkor's glory.

10- Bas-relief devatas. Though the figures are set against plain backgrounds, their elaborate hairstyles, head ornaments and gestures, each unique, are testimony to the richness of the aesthetic vocabulary of Khmer court culture.

Re: Siem Reap Journal
here are some people shots around AW:
13- 'baby basketcase.'
14- a vendor selling sap from Livistionia palmtree. it is said to be cooling--nature's gatorade.
15- 'one dollar jumper' kids there would do just about anything for a dollar. here is jumping abt 5-7meters above the moat fronting AW.
16- 'and who wouldn't smile for a dollar.' that's my colleague shooting them at close range.
17- 'my name is Tar and here's my friend Jar.' it's not difficult to like the locals. though living in poor conditions, they are still cheerful and willing to give up a smile for nothing.

Re: Siem Reap Journal
18- 'unfinished relief.' i believe this is part of the restoration being done as the stone looks fresh from the quarry. i like how they did it though, instead of replicating the original which they might have no reference at all. abstraction as you call it.
19- 'hindu stain.' these are remnants of the richness of colours applied on the structural elements at the height of AW's glory.
20- 'headless buddha.' you'll see a lot of these at the 'gallery of one thousand buddhas.' the heads were said to have been looted.
21- 'puddle of relief.' shadow carvings reflected from the puddle. those were not pebbles, the texture are stone carvings. those were 'unglazed tiles' of their times

22- further close up of one of the gopuras. part of the ongoing restoration is to reinforce the stones, hence bonding agent were applied. you really can't tell as they did it meticolously.

Re: Siem Reap Journal
23- '10-limbed Buddha.' one would wonder how a Hindu temple, built as a dedication to Vishnu houses thousands of Buddhas? some even associate the 'asparas' to Buddhism when in fact they are not. when King Jayavarman VII (a Mahayana Buddhist) succeeded to lead the Khmer Empire he built the Bayon and converted Angkor Wat as a temple for Buddhism.
