lens
Just a quick hyphothetical industrial camera lens for a tv commercial pitch. Created from a bunch of random googled references. I seldom get the opportunity to sit down and do stuff like everyone does but this is one of those quick moments. About 4 to five hours work this morning.
More or less done until I get the go signal from the clients.

Only the front view will be used, I just added bits of details on the sideviews just for some displacement and mapping
experiments (jiko manzoku!).
Comments are welcome of course.

Re: lens
For my own projects, I always do everything in max. If I can get away without PS, I'll even do maps in max. The lens is the main highlight of the project - so it took 25% of the total production time to model, light and work out the final glass lens look.
Thank you for the kind comments.

Re: lens
A very rare occurence, this one. You've even got that rainbow thingie in the lens down pat huh... Pardon my eggheadedness; on the wireframe; what are the 2 planes for?...
Very subtle diff tween the refs & the renders... Hard to distinguish, really...
You should post more often, Bentot-san...

Re: lens
Thanks guys!
Keen eye kuya! I should bring back my original avatar. I realized that his long time partners up there on yours Mr. Pugo!
BTW, Those planes are reflector cards ( I just made up the name)
Self-illumated (I used vraylight mats) whose only purpose is to appear on reflections (the whites on the lens and the glossy highlights on the other objects). Those planes are aligned perpendicularly to surfaces of the objects I want them to appear on. I can explain a quick way to precisely place highlights on object surfaces if anybody's interested..
As for the rainbow thing, I looked at a lot of lens refernces and came up with a solution using a spiral gradient ramp composite mapped over the HDRI used for the reflections.

Re: lens
THanks Tutik, gaara and max!
I do not know if it's tutorial worthy but as I mentioned above, placing highlights (catch lights) is easy as simply aligning and linking the catch lights (reflector cards) to a spotlight.
Turn this spotlight off since you don't need it to produce light, you'll only use it to interactively position the catch lights (reflector cards).
Select the light , click the "Place Highlight" button in the Align dropdown menus in the command panel.
You'll find the cursor change to a cross as it goes over a legitimate object surface. Drag-click the cursor to any suface and you'll find the lights (and the linked catch lights) interactly move and point to the desired surface.
The place highlight function is there to do what it does. The same procedure is used when you want lights to affect the specular properties or to cleverly point a light into the direction of an object in the scene.

i find the "rainbow thingie" on the lens quite interesting. hindi ko nga lang po naintindihan the above mentioned "spiral gradient ramp composite mapped over the HDRI used for the reflections"
wish you could share some links or further info for this sir

Re: lens
wow looks interesting sir V. hope too see more updates on this. at the same time learning from you as well...
Ps. i notice the chrome bar polygons looks too much. or is it really necessary to pump higher to have a good quality render?
