Pacquiao makes De La Hoya quit after eight



LAS VEGAS – Round-by-round coverage of pound-for-pound kingpin Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight victory over Oscar De La Hoya. Pacquiao won via TKO when De La Hoya couldn’t answer the bell for the ninth round.

ROUND 1
De La Hoya closed as a 2-1 favorite. De La Hoya is minus-200 and Pacquiao is plus-170. The over-under is 9½ rounds. Pacquiao comes out with a slight weight advantage tonight. On the unofficial HBO scales, he weighed 148½ and De La Hoya was 147. De La Hoya is the aggressor early, but nothing lands in the first minute. Straight left from Pacquiao and then a combination from Pacquiao connects. Lead left by Pacquiao. Right to the body by Oscar. Manny misses a big hook. Straight left by Pacquiao. Combination to the head by De La Hoya backs Pacquiao up. Right by Oscar connects. Straight left by Manny.

Hard jab and then a left by Pacquiao. Lead left by Pacquiao.

ROUND 3
Lead left from Pacquiao to open the round connects. De La Hoya has to stop that. De La Hoya is doing nothing offensively in first minute of round. Pacquiao flicks a jab that is short. Right to the head and left to the body from De La Hoya. Lead left again by Pacquiao. Left to the body from Pacquiao. Oscar seems befuddled. Right hook to the body from Pacquiao.

De La Hoya connects with a jab, but first 30 seconds of round are very slow. They’re circling but not throwing much. Pacquiao lands a right hook. Triple jab from Pacquiao. Combination from Pacquiao backs De La Hoya up. The way this is going, it wouldn’t be a shock if De La Hoya were to quit on the stool at some point. He’s taking a tremendous amount of punishment. Body shot by Oscar lands and then two lefts. Oscar’s left eye is closing. He looks like a beaten, old and shot fighter.

Nothing happens in first minute of round. Pacquiao lands left to body and a left to the cheek. They trade in the corner and Pacquiao gets the best of it. Straight left from Pacquiao lands. Hard straight left by Pacquiao snaps Oscar’s head back. De La Hoya’s left eye is a mess. Right by Pacquiao lands on that eye. This may be stopped soon by the corner.

Lead right by De La Hoya lands to open the round. Pacquiao rakes De La Hoya with a three-punch combination. Double jab by Manny. Pacquiao batters De La Hoya into the corner. He’s pinned on the ropes and Pacquiao is firing away. Fight is close to ending. Pacquiao is hitting De La Hoya hard with everything he throws. Oscar is in big, big trouble. Left to the body by Pacquiao hurts Oscar. Oscar has never been beaten like this in any of his 44 previous fights. Pacquiao is overwhelming him.

malamang nga dahil sa weight loss pero thats a very old school alibi sa mga boxers hehehe tama nga... naging mismatch si dela hoya lol buti hindi ako pumusta ng sunugan ng bahay, kawawa sana ung bahay ng arabo na inuupahan ko lol

Actually my opinion is, Oscar didn't boxed the way he should.... Maybe his weight drop down and age as well became the main factor for this ... I guess his prime is over. It's just that we got used to seeing Oscar fighting with bigger opponents and an entirely different phase. I'm not saying that we got lucky, Manny really fought a different level too. Even I bet on Oscar's triumph too and the end of Manny's streak. But happy to say, I was wrong.... Once again, speed proved to be ONE of the main factor in boxing. Now I guess with this big win Manny's quest is just about to begin.... New challenge! New breed of bigger division fighters!! Grabe na toh!!

roche and manny practiced Delahoya strength-the left side in the gym, therefore because of the lateral and head movement applied he cannot really launhed is arsena. we could see manny is coming in going out and put the figth in the middle of the ring. Whenever DLH launch his left, a missile from manny comes first, then atras na napakbilis. therefore what can you do if yuor very strength has been countered successfully.. but one thing manny has really followed the fight plan, you could just really see a matured one coming and going. and even bugbog na si DLH ay nandun parin yung fight plan sa isip nya...so one thing raly in this fight manny has matured already hindi katulad ng dati na sugod ng sugod.

It's just sad na wala kayong bilib sa kababayan natin.

Hehehe di naman ser boks. Minsan nga pag nagkakatuwaan kami ng mga kabarkads ko dito when manny has an incoming bout, we say, sana matalo na kasi nakakasawa, pero syempre biro lang yun. Talagang any person would predictively bet on the non underdog.. which was Oscar. Pride and love for our own na lang talaga ang pag pili natin kay Manny. Talagang shocking lang ang pinakita ni Oscar sa laban nila. Very un-Oscar like ika nga.... Very slow and confused. Manny on the otherhand did what he was supposed to do. jab jab go back circle around, jab jab go back circle around and so on.... Ayun!! Maga tuloy mukha ni Oscar

ok lang naman bro, but i didn't see oscar winning that fight even before pa sa first discussion dito. mala iron mike ang naforesee ko nun. hehe. nung nastun si de la hoya sa bilis ng suntok ni pacquiao, dun ako lalo nabilib na indestructable na si manny, winning is always better imho, not only you bring pride to the country, but hope to the people.

there was a lot of media-hyping before the fight in favour of ODLH. they succeeded enough to balance the perceived match-up even if it's ridiculously one-sided as it turned out. it worked well on both sides. for Manny a stamp in history+not bad paycheck while for ODLH a much bigger paycheck despite the devastation (the most he can cash in before retirement). the aftermath opens up more opportunities for Manny as everyone will be hungry to cash in on his next fights.

but the biggest regret (as one of the commentators mentioned after the fight) putting up a fight like this is for us to see the best of their best battle it out, but it turned out to be a one-sided match. a very disappointing show by ODLH, or maybe Manny was really too good, too invisible!

i hope the next dream matches will be a 'winner takes all' to avoid such dissapointments. but as Bokkins mentioned, every win is definitely good as it brings pride, hope and glory to our country.

there will be no more rematch sa DLH-PACMAN 2... DLH will remain the golden boy image boxer and he's retiring... medyo ayaw lang nilang aminin ang lahat na ipinupukol na tanung sa kanilang camp... may problema din si DLH on his left shoulder na indi nila pinapahalata lalo sa mga DLH DH fans.... at yung pag quit ni DLH before round 9 started, is to exclude himself from further punishments and to protect his boxing career champ image.... nakakahiya naman on global television na makita ang pagbagsak niya (TKO) sa ring canvass at sa kamay pa ni PACMAN

not making excuses to its left shoulder problem... (DLH main power arsenal)
but instead i admire DLH for his great decisioin as you do....
