Re: Avatar
LOlz... nice conversation guys, no qualms pricklypineapple, frankly I enjoy our little argument, and for the sake of argument, i would like to point out why I like the story the way it is rather than the way you might wanted it to be.
SPOILER ALERT!!!! Don't read this if you haven't watched the movie yet...
First off, I agree with you. Story is very generic and I actually knew how it ended by watching the trailers alone. Yet after seeing it, I felt that because of its simplicity I was able to enjoy the film much more. Here are a few more reasons why...
- Its titled Avatar... having a Navi main character would then change the title to.... Navi or Navi the awakening (joke)
- Human was chosen as the protagonist since the point of the movie is based on seeing the world of Pandora on the eyes of the humans. As you can see we start off and end with the eyes. First with the human eye and we awaken in the end with the Navi eye. There we can understand that the human (or part off) now sees the truth behind the Navi world.
- With Jake's point of view, the camera movement now focuses around the beauty of the world of Pandora, James (Cameron) wants us to experience Pandora and if our main character was Navi it would not be the same. The viewers experience then coincides with the main character and the "movie experience" would be emphasized. This is due to the fact that we the viewers can relate to the Human character since deep behind in our minds we know that the Avatar is a human and we can relate to him.
- The whole experience of awe and wonder would be nullified if our main character was Navi. The movie was after all made to be experienced... that's why we should watch it in 3D!
On the other hand , Luke Skywalker may be Alien, but he still is a Human like alien, where we can easily relate to him, unlike the Blue People of Pandora where we need the Human factor to connect with them. If the movie started with the Navi immediately, there would be a disconnection between the characters and the viewers since we don't have any previous memory nor experience or have seen such creatures up until we saw the movie.
That;s why the movie ended with our Protagonist going with them... that is the connection where we the humans then could root for the Navi and not side on the Humans... and that is a good Part 2 for the movie!
Prickly I respect your point of view, but for me, the movie was good as it is. Simple story and amazing visual effects.
NUFF Said! Geek out!

Re: Avatar
I just came from the movies, and finally got to check out AVATAR. And boy, the graphics was just awesome!
I think the simple story line, was just the right contrast to the effects laden Cameron film. If I have some gripes, it would be the length of the picture, which spawned at almost 3 hours, or was it, or did it have a total running time of three hours? I had to wait until about the last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie before I relieved myself (i felt the call at about halfway through the movie), so that I would not miss out on most of the action.
For discussions sake, the fact that Jake was an outsider, might and could gave someone the idea that foreign intervention is the way to go for liberation. Or it could be Hollywood's way of subliminally, implying that their race is the better one. We can never be really sure, since it is merely a work of fiction.
Having Jake as the main lead, allows the viewers to empathize, with him, therefore, effectively establishing the experience of the beauty of pandora, and it's environs.
Overall it was a good one, not necessarily Cameron's best work, although my memory can't recall any film done by him at the moment.
I wish I could experience this one on 3d, well, probably if one of you guys can lend me one of your eyes..just kidding....I'll grab a special edition DVD if one comes out.

Re: Avatar
yeah its awesome!!
in fact James Cameron start developing this movie since 1994 and it would have been released in 1999 but according to Cameron, "technology needed to catch up" with his vision of the film.

Hes planning sequels if the movie will be succesful so go watch it

Hindi deserve ng avatar yung kinita, its the greatest movie of 2009 at pinaghirapan talaga to ni cameron, dinevelop niya pa to since 1994 so worth nito ay mas malaki compare sa ibang movies

Re: Avatar
I hardly pay attention to the plot or the storyline as long as there are highs and lows and everything is well established that's good enough for me. I mean you strip down the colors, you'd still get the same storyline/plot. May it be Godfather, No country for Old Men, Titanic, As Good As it Gets, Million Dollar Baby, Shawshank Redemption, its all the same thing if you strip the movie to its bones. Story is as "basic" as a human's life.
Also, I'm sure that there's a version of the story where Jake or the main character was a Na'vi but it was never chosen because he was killed 30 minutes into the movie.
@mammoo_03 - Thanks for sharing. Great find. There's an interview of Jim Cameron by Popular Mechanics posted on Youtube. I don't know if its posted here or in the other forums but anyway he said all the lights in render were actually calculated. Meaning, there were no fake illumination and every light emitting object's photons were computed. That explains the 2400 frames/sec.

Re: Avatar
One hell of an experience!
I mean, 4get about the story, I know it's a basic one and that you know what will be the ending, but dude, the scenes are great and the camera angle are something I never experienced before...totally awesome!
I strongly recommend that you watch it, and watch it in 3D!!!
Not just blu-ray not just dvd! I just wish though that we could get away with wearing the annoying glasses...
I wish I could say more, but I believe you need to experience it to believe it.
Overall, I say, this movie deserves a slot in my collection....
