Phuket Mansion - 2 Storey House
Hi to all. Again, I just want to share my 3D practice. It’s been too long since I’ve done something for my free time due to shortage of rendering services. Hehe…
This is my work detail.
Design:
It is 150sqm+ of floor area of 2 storey. The design is inspired by the Architecture that can be found in Phuket, Indonesia. Modernized and applied design to suite our climatic and lifestyle here in the Philippines. I limited the materials with stucco, rough concrete and 2 tones to wood. I made it simple same as my other designs.
3D:
House: I practiced my modeling in Sketchup with reference plan in CAD format. Pretty simple but yet challenging to me switching form 3ds max to SK modeling. SK presentation in conceptual state is great IMO.
Vegetation: I used Itoo Forest Lite to distribute my grass because I don’t usually use displacement map (preferance) except for a bigger scale project. Trees are generated in Onyx Suite. I made 2 trees and distributed to using Itoo Forest Lite again with different in different sizes. The rest of the vegetations are duplicated using Vray Proxy. I was thinking of mixing dried leaves with fresh ones so that I can scatter some leaves on the foreground. And oh, I forgot couple of leaves also along the road. Oh well.
Lighting: I situated the VraySun slightly at the back of the house. Never done this before but I saw some renderings that looks good this location.
Rendering: Unfortunately I only have 32bit OS and 4GB of ram. It was quite hard to render at 2800px up at a medium setting. But I finally did it. Saved the light map to a slightly smaller resolution and then rendered the image using VFB and Vrimg. I also used ZDepth for DOF. I think I can achieve better control over the DOF with this workflow. Sun glare and mood are made in PS.
I guess that’s it. Hope everybody also learned something from this.
Cheers to all!

Re: Phuket Mansion - 2 Storey House
hi chobs... the mood is nice.. but its kinda over bright on some parts... the render looks pixelated on my view... do you have something bigger than these? maybe you could post some settings including your vray sun, vray cam and vray settings (for newbie's benefit) ... these are nice btw...

Re: Phuket Mansion - 2 Storey House
Thanks again to all. I will try to give some screen shots on my lighting setup. For render settings, it is just medium irr. and light cache. Nevertheless I'll still post for the sake of many.
I use flickr to post my images. I think there are some incompatibility between the browsers. The image in flickr is 1024px. Original size of the render is 2800px plus. Thanx for the comments Erick
Sky is over bright because I followed the principle of photography where in if the subject is backlit, the subject is underexposed then the sky has a normal exposure or the other way around. You usually meter your camera(slr) in the subject then compramise the detail of the sky unless you will bracket then blend or use HDR. My intention here to replicate the usual output of an unprocessed picture from the camera.

Re: Phuket Mansion - 2 Storey House
Hi guys. Here is the setup that I did in this scene. For clarifications just don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers!
This is the general setup that my scene has. Very simple model plus trees in front, back and sides of the house plus some 3D vegetation that I converted to Vray Proxies. The VraySun is at the back of the house slightly low (mid afternoon like 4:00pm to 5:00pm).
Make sure you set your Gamma to 2.2 on the Preference Settings Menu before using the VraySun, VrayCam and VraySky.
The settings of the VraySun is very typical I just usually change the turbidity to 4.0 for more tropical atmosphere or feel. 2.0 for turbidity is more European or winter feel IMO. Try to play with the size multiplier. With my limited hardware power (4Gb RAM/ 32 bit OS) I only set it to “0” so that it will just cast crisp shadows and of coarse for faster render.
I made 4 cam location and each has a different focal length depending on the area of target. I usually adjust the exposures in the VrayCam like for instance here. I adjusted the f-stop, shutter and ISO in such a way that I can get the average exposure of the scene then adjust it later in PS.
The VraySky has more or less has the same setup as the VraySun. Pick the sun as the node of the sky so that the sky will have an accurate placing. Synchronize the settings then drag and drop it to the environment and ref slot.
And finally my render setup, not much right? I just used the preset of the Irr. And Light Cache then bump the Global Subdv Multiplier to 2.
Hope this helps
