Re: 3D Max Material Composition Tips

You can do in in Max or vray out of the box. I am referring to 3D cartoons and not toon rendering ala finaltoon. They are two different ballgames. It's easier to learn from your own works if you know what went wrong.
BTW, Speaking of 3D cartoons, aside from design - 80% of the total look is driven by lighting.

The above samples were done using falloffs for diffuse, simple skylight for GI and one direct light. All diffuse colors are max mats except for those that would have texts in them.
Re: 3D Max Material Composition Tips
thnks for the headup vertex..
to setheichel
actually there are a lot of ways to do what you want, its on the compositing procedures, light, materials
here one example i have done using toonshaders in scanline rendering.

Re: 3D Max Material Composition Tips

Re: 3D Max Material Composition Tips
Well, I do not think I am even worthy to dissect works from the biggies.
So I can only share how I manage doing my own works:
I always add a tint of red to areas of skin that might have translucency, I do this by painting a B&W mask to distinguise the regular skin from the reddish skin. I do not paint skin btw, its all falloff driven diffuse
As for lighting - it has been an unconscious tradition because perhaps it looks nice to our senses - shadows cool and highlights warm. Like when the sun is low, it casts a warm light and shadows appear blue. This particular contrast makes skin look nice and dull ones interesting. Also try to emphasize distance, either by lighting or dof or fogging environments.
Lastly, you might want to lessen more of the boxy straight line feel. Try to break your lines. Randomize. The freedom of line flows make cartoons - cartoons.
