oooh thanks for posting this here sir boks. saw this a couple years back but forgot to bookmark it.
on another note, wire or isoline renders can also be easily achieved with VrayEdgesTex map on the diffuse channel of your standard VRayMtl.

To add, you can also use a simple white bitmap with black outlines on the edges - and face map that if you're a bit lazy tinkering with the gradients.
But of course, if you are a max/vray fanatic - you could also try vrayedges texture or the default INK and Paint materials in 3dsmax.

Re: Wire and Isoline Clay Render in 3DS
another workaround or rather style would be:
1. edit poly/edit mesh - select all edges - create new shape from selection/create shape from edges.
2. convert new shape to editable spline and enable viewport/render.
3. apply a colored mat to the shape and just adjust the size of "wires" on the editable spline.

While in principle this isn't wrong, the process is akin to just adding a lathe modifier with only the edges on. In max, there are a million ways to do the same thing - you just need to choose what's further editable, faster and not so ram-hungry..
