exr file shows silhouette in photoshp

Hi guys
I have been doing a rendering saved as an exr file and once I start editing in photoshop and changing the mode to 8bits a silhouette always shows up.
It's very apparent once I introduce a background layer behind it.
Render output looks fine but can't get rid of the silhouette. Any information would be highly appreciated. Cheers.
