Unnoticeable Details (with Making of)
Hello to all.
I rendered this set for my friend. He designed the Architecture as well as the Planing of the house. Inspired by Modern Asian Architectural with some hint of western details. The project has also this earth tone palette to create a warm feeling. This is a house after all right?
Finally after all the troubles of blue screens and PC crash, reformatting of my HDD and short sleeps I'm done with this set.
Software used:
Sketchup 8 + Lots of plugins
3ds max 2012 + vray + more plugins
Photoshop cs 5 + lots of plugins
New things that I learned:
1. Difference between noise and film grain
2. Better render setup and strategy
3. Backburner setup for render queue
Making of:
Here's a mini "Making of". Apologies in advance if I will overlook some things.
I won't be able to discuss everything in detail but if you have any questions,
feel free to post.
1. Modeling
I modeled this project in Sketchup 8 and used a lot of plugins for this.
I love to model in sketchup. Somehow it shows you already a good to go concept presentation to the client.
Here's a screen shot
After modeling it in Sketchup I used 3ds Max 2012 and Vray to render.
Here's a wireframe. I'll limit my discussion to this camera view.
2.Vegetation:
Here are the grass and trees I used in this project. I used Multiscatter to scatter several iGrass in the foreground and used Autograss for the grass near the house.
iGrass
Trees from Evermotion
Some Shrubs
3. Material:
This is my setup on my material setting. Nothing so fancy. Just don't forget to lower the blur value in your bitmap slot. And it is always better to use texture rather than the default color even if your wall is painted.
4. Light Setup:
Lately, I've been using Vray dome with HDRI as it texture and add a direct light to add and define more shadow. I use Peter Guthrie's technique. You can find his tutorial in the net.
Here's the setup
5. Render Setup:
I am using a better PC now as compared to my old Quad Core Core2Duo. i7 is really amazing. You get 8 cores rendering your image. That's a big boost from the previous processors.
Anyway, here is my combo when I render. Irridiance Map plus Light Cache. I used the preset of vray in the Irr Map slot because I don't have the time to digest and understand the nitty gritty details. I just always save my light map into a lower resolution to save more time. Then use backburner to queie my renders and sleep. Hehehe...
Oh, don't forget the render elements specially the Zdpeth and AO. I also use MatID and ObjectID render element if the project is big. Those are veryhelpful.
Render Output:
RGB
AO
Zdepth
6.Post Process:
I used Photoshop CS 5, DOF PRO and Knoll Light Factory to highlight the light source at the night scene.
Aside from the Color Balance and Levels adjustments, I add this list:
1. Depth of field by using DOF PRO with Zdepth map
2. Chromatic Aberration using Lens Correction in PS
3. Ambient Occlussion in multiply blend
4. Vignette using lens correction in PS and apply layer in multiply blend
5. Film Grain! Woohoo. New discovery ko to.
Here's a technique. Even if it is a small detail, it will be worth it.
7.Final Output:
Finally, a side by side look.
Original Render
Final Render + Post Process
Here are the other images. Hope you like it.

Thanks to all and more power to CGpinoy!

Thanks Valiant for the comment.
Rumealee: I'll try to post the settings here in CGP so that everybody will see it. Di ko naman pinagdadamot yan kasi natutunan ko rin yan sa iba.

Re: Unnoticeable Details (with Making of)
But other than that, great job.

very nice and i like the way you put the contexts chobs. very inspiring and fuilfilling after the momentary suffering.
Re: Unnoticeable Details (with Making of)
Thanks guys for the comments.
torvicz: Medyo naging headache kasi yang set na yan. Yung GI, medyo naging conservative kasi ako. I tried to avoid burnouts or maybe mahina lang talaga yung burn value sa Reinhard. Plus I didn't know what to do with the GI render element sa Photoshop. Huhu... (dodge ba yun? I'll check that out)
As of the night scene. Nagpahabol lang yung client that is showing the slope kaya the night scenes are more or less additional lang. With all honesty I really can find anymore angles para sa night scene. Medyo overkill nga lang talaga yung number of images. Hehe... Thanks for the comment bro.

Re: Unnoticeable Details (with Making of)
I like the blue against orange combo, kung medyo maliwanag pa ng konti - OKs sa magic hour.
ANyways, ala naman akong masasabi pa since nabanggit na nila siguro but one thing I felt the longer I look at it, parang may dumi yong mata ko around the edges that causes the blur rather than the DOF itself. Must be how DOF PRO does it, or the succession on when the vignette was applied (much like the noise which should be the last step).
Aside from the angles and the lenses used na medyo may pagka miniature pa ng konti, yon lang muna ang masasabi ko.

Thanks for the comments wrangler.
I added a Film Grain Layer so baka yun yung nakikita mo sa side. I am not sure if it is just right or it's a bit too much. I was also experimenting on the orange and blue combination. I found an HDRI in SIBL that works well. I just had to rotate it in such a way that the reflection won't get the building in the HDRI image.
I used 24mm on the day scene and about 70-80mm in the night scene. I exaggerated the DOF a bit so maybe that's why it look's like a miniature shot. I am not aware if there is an effect if I placed the Film Grain on the top most layer. I'll try this pero usually di ko na napapansin if which goes on top of another (DOF, CA, Vignette or Film Grain)
Thanks again.
