the first thing to do is attach one item to another making it as one item..
then select the vertices thru RECTANGULAR SELECTION region (just below the animation pull down menu)
and WELD them... or you may also try the weld target...

to add

after attached, select segment if you wish to take out the line between them, when extrude, it is hollow, just apply cap hole modifier.

easiest way kung hindi naman transparent is - extrude mo ung circle at extrude mo ung isa pa. that's it. Smile

here's my take on this. will guarantee a clean single spline to be extruded.

trim works fine also... but for additional workflow, try using the break command...

here's what you can do...

select the circle as current selected...
and hit the break icon (just above the trim function on mushroom 2nd pic and beside the create line icon)
point your cursor by selecting the vertices on 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock of the circle,
and hit the move tool to detach the bottom edge and leaving a eclipse circle like a pie...
weld the intersecting vertices together and follow the remaining steps...

hope it gives more freedom on your work
cheers

hi dickie interesting point. im trying your method out but it seems to leave me with a distorted circle, and it results in a different shape (the circle loses its initial curves)

unless you have an illustration that explains otherwise?

When I am faced with this problem, I usually do sir mushroom's technique. It's like doing CAD operations inside of max, using the trim command, and welding those vertices. Of course you will have to attach both splines first, either by converting your circle to an editable spline or, simply attaching the circle to your other line, which I am sure is already an editable spline in itself.

Hope that clears things.

ei dickie thanks for the clarification. however what's the next step in welding the vertices? if the vertices of the circle doesnt sit exactly on the 2 vertices of the line, welding it with a high threshold will "relocate" them and the basic shape will be distorted right?

here's an illustration to explain my point

1. i presume the next step is to move that arc closer to the line to make an intersection

[help] mga master look at this po 48640024bi3

2. then we select the vertices. the intention is to weld the adjacent ones. however to do this the threshold value needs to be increased. in this example i used 50.

[help] mga master look at this po 13248620wk2

3. with this method, notice that the profile of the lines have changed.

[help] mga master look at this po 28387632aw4

4. here's a comparative before and after effect of the spline

[help] mga master look at this po 79313428fo3

is this the method that you were describing?

in fact the trim command isn't 100% accurate as well especially if you are trimming hundreds of vertices/lines. the spline interpolation has an effect on the overall shape when vertex adjustments are made. this happens a lot when we construct land plots and sidewalk openings (which are trimmed versions of the original land patches) and sometimes there are certain inconsistencies in the shape which we always review and tweak.

hi mushroom, the easiest method we can both apply and to address properly its alignment of that two intersecting lines, sample as Z and O splines hehehhehe... and to answer the inquiry of welding them in exact places wo further problems.. first we might take the O spline into its alignment over the Z at the beginning of the step. see pics

[help] mga master look at this po Break1_6

then we can proceed on attaching both into one item... weld the vertices then extrude them to your preferred height...

hope it helps..!!!
cheers

Kuya V will probably do that in a few clicks:

1. Make sure both shapes are closed
2. Attach Circle to Arrow shape or vice-versa
3. Go to sub-object spline, select either of the two closed splines
4. Hit boolean Union, select the other shape and automatically, the splines will be cut, weld where each edges meet
4. You now have a single spline that you can extrude
