Village of Lourmarin
Thematic Home Theater, Pebble Beach, CA, USA.
This themed wing of a rural French village, replicated in its cobblestone paths and stone walls and wooden doors, and infused with the interests and collections of the homeowner, is a connoisseur's delight. This new-old version of rural France in costal California contains a cigar shop, a wine shop, a toy store a stationary shop for a pen collection, even a grocery store and public restrooms-not to mention and elaborate elegant theater. Venture down the cobblestone ways and you're in a French country village, complete with views of a village through a gate. Stroll past the water-fountain statue and the theater marquee, and a toy train may chug past and into the toy store next door. Turn down the hall to find stone wall facades and aged wooden and wrought iron entrances to the stationary, the cigar shop with a magazine rack in front, the wine shop, bank and grocery.
...Still can't believe this is a client's basement! Snapshots from an animation done with 3DViz r2, scanline passes comped in Aftereffects.

Re: Village of Lourmarin
are you aiming for a cg-ish effect here? or not actually? there are some bump and map issues here... hope you can rid of that on your next project.. good luck sir and more power
Re: Village of Lourmarin
Thanks gurus for your comments! Yeah, I guess I was going for the cg look...was there any other looks back in 2000?
I like to open up this file every now and then, looking back to how far visualization has come...these days we have GI, FG, AO, BRDF ( insert your favorite acronym here: )
Imagine where it will be 5 years from now?!!!
All the best everyone!

Re: Village of Lourmarin
Wow! year 2000, I was already doing 3d and renderings during that time, using AutoCAD. I encountered VIZ4 about 3 yrs later, but would eventually learn to render acceptable images after another 3 yrs. And still currently struggling to keep up with the good guys in this community.
Very nice output for a scanline rendering. Considering that the scanline is a tough act to work with. Without knowledge about how light works and how materials behave with light, one can never achieve such good images in scanline. I for one is still struggling with the traditional way of digitally rendering a scene. It still is great specially in this day and age where vray and all other GI softwares is king.
I salute you for sharing this one with us. Hopefully the new batch will see that this was already topnotch 8 years ago.

Salamat aldrinv2, nico and arkiedmund!
Luckily, Jeremy Birn's [digital] Lighting & Rendering book just came out in 2000! I read it cover to cover the day it came out These days, I have all your wonderful work on CGP for inspiration
I dusted off the animation to this piece and posted it here, have a look if you have some time:

I also have that book...but I got my copy only four years ago. A very good reference for people who want to learn beyond shift+q.
now checking the animation. Will get back here later on. Looking forward to more from you sir.
