max is not downgrade compatible. at least in the current version of max.

If a max file was made in a higher version, you will find a notice pop up when you load a file. To be able to use a max file made from a higher version, export the file either to fbx or obj ( if an object/mesh is just what you require). there is nol current way to export a maxfile (with all max speciifc deformations/animations/speciic settings intact.)

thanks master v for the quick reply... gnun ba... hmmm wala pala tlga paraan... hirap din pala gumamit ng latest version ng 3ds max.. disadvantage is hindi mo masshare sa mga client or colleagues mo ung file if hindi updated din ung 3ds max nila (e.g. 3ds max 8 or 9 marami pa rin kasi mga company gumagamit ng ganitong version).. sana magawan ng autodesk na pwedeng backward compatible mga 3ds maxfile nila

There is no disadvantahe proprietary to max. The case is the same even if you use a different 3d app. The disadvantage is not knowing berorehand the market you serve. If you are working for a client who requires a particular file in a defined max version, then by all means produce your scenes in the required format. Not knowing before hand is a workflow error and would only put the blame unto you. If you are unsure or if you deem the possibilty of the max file being used or opened in a different version, it is your responsibilty to work on a the lowest possible version so that it can be loaded on newer or future versions of 3dsmax.

In my experience, whenever we work with clients who specifically require the max file as deliverables ,we make sure to ask them what version they require, this is to avoid problems like yours.

That is like wishing to a make believe well. Why is that? Well (that rhymes), if you notice every max release has new functions and improvements and current technologies in the previous versions normally do not have the same technologies brought into them (thus new releases). but lo and behold, MX2010 has brought new architecture which will eventually pave way for a new language that will allow just somehow newer files (after max2010) to be loaded and modified in the next releases.

Your current resolve as this point is as I have explained, make sure to ask your clients what version they require and work from there.
