Re: my artwork..
hi ladygium salamat sa pagdaan sa thread ko
you have some nice portraits here.. good placing of features. yung second image mas better na yung values mo, which i think the megan image could use improvement on. it's a good habit to view your work in grayscale once in awhile, so you can check the values.
i notice na you placed a very hard edge on your classmate's chin while the rest of her face is soft.. this is the tendency when people try to separate the neck from the face, but placing the hard edge there tends to flatten them both. one thing that might help you is to control your edges. pasensya na medyo mahina akong mag-explain kaya i painted my explanation instead:
there are 2 kinds of shadows, form & cast. yung form shadows pag unti-unting nagtuturn away yung object from the light source. gradual yung pag recede ng light, kaya soft din yung edge nya. on the other hand, cast shadows occur pag may something na nagbablock ng light source, like sa baba ng nostril (binablock nung nose yung light source). cast shadows slowly become soft as it goes farther from the form blocking the light. as an example think of a person standing in the sun casting a shadow on the floor. the edge of his shadow is very hard closest to his feet, but as you look at the shadow as it goes away from his feet nagiging soft na yung edges.
i highly recommend "the artist's complete guide to drawing the head" by william maughan. this book is invaluable for learning not only how to draw heads convincingly but also about values & edge control. it's discussed in many other art books but for some reason maughan was the one who really cleared it up for me.
varying your edges alone would give more solidity to your work, but this can only be put to use if you understand the forms of what you are drawing, in this case the form & structure of the head. so even if you're drawing from reference or from life, it helps to have knowledge of how to construct the head. there's a vast number of art books & videos dedicated to the head, my recommendation would be andrew loomis. his books can be downloaded here for free, but the knowledge within is worth its weight in gold.
better yung treatment mo ng hair sa second image, kasi buo-buo sya unlike nung k megan. when you paint hair think of them as forms instead of strings, kasi when you've painted down the forms you can always control the detail of strands later. but starting off with the strands will make you lose sight of the form. always paint general to specific. big forms, then break them down to small forms. after that you can detail to your heart's content.
last na.. if you have a tablet, try not to use the soft brush too much, this gives a very "photoshopped" look. instead, try to paint with the regular hard brush with flow set to pen pressure, or use a spackled brush which simulates the look of real brushes. maganda din yun for blending.
so ayun, hope that helps. pasensya na kung mahaba.. i would really like to see you take your work further because you have some good stuff here na. and i hope you post more work soon, i'll drop by again nalang next time. keep painting

Re: my artwork..
that's kind of you kapatid, but i'm still very much a beginner your work is very good for a first timer with a mouse, pero ingat lang, masakit sa wrist yan baka magkaron ka ng carpal tunnel syndrome. try to get a tablet as soon as you are able, mas mura sya sa greenhills. it's a good investment naman in the long run. i'm sure you'll be cranking out painting after painting
Re: my artwork..
I share your sentiments with the mouse hehe..pag meron kayong alam na murang tablet pa heads up naman kahit graphire lang na 2nd hand, aalangan kasi ako sa tablet sa cdrking sa mga nabasa ko reviews..
