Some tips for effective Googling
Most of us use Google extensively in our day-to-day tasks, be it searching for code to software to the nearest restaurant to relish dinner at. But you can make Google work that much more harder or effective if you know the tips. Here are a few tips to make your Googling experience more effective:
How does Google interpret basic search?
Google places "AND" operator between all search terms entered in basic search box.
Automatically searches for some plural/singular and grammatical variants.
You enter: cnet news
Google searches: cnet AND news OR news
Does not search as exact phrase unless quotes are present. Eg: "cnet news"
Expand your search with synonym?
Using a "tilde", e.g. "~cnet", finds Web sites similar to cnet
Search by filetype (pdf, ppt, xls, doc)
e.g. "Google Filesystem" filetype:ppt
This returns only links to ppts that match the query.
Now how about some negative search terms?
e.g. "nano - tata" will return the results with the word "nano" but not Tata Nano car
Limit your search results to a particular Web site
e.g. "vista site:jsbi.blogspot.com" will get the pages from jsbi.blogspot.com where the word "vista" is referred.
Search for sites that link to a particular Web site
e.g. "link:jsbi.blogspot.com"
Google is also a dictionary
Find definition of a word or a phrase?
e.g. define: nuts
The other search operators for you to venture on are:
allinanchor:
allintext:
allintitle:
allinurl:
cache:
group:
info:
time
weather

If you stumble on a site and cant read the language you can just go to google translate or perhaps install google translate toolkit and the site text will be translated in to your preferred language, ito yung ginagawa ng ibang lahi kong office mate kaya nakaka intendi sya ng CGP.
