10 Stupid Expressions That Must Die Soon (of Filipinos) - Page 2 Empty 10 Stupid Expressions That Must Die Soon (of Filipinos)

First topic message reminder :

http://www.spot.ph/2009/05/19/ten-stupid-expressions-that-must-die-soon/

DO TAKE NOTE OF NUMBER 4 ..(para sa lahat ng mga feeling pa-cute dyan!)

4. “Elow po”— With the optional “poh.” Indicates that the speaker is either a 14-year-old girl who has a pink-wallpapered Friendster account or just a complete dumbass.

Unfortunately, language does not have a governing body like the WHO. There are no monitoring bodies to track down the migration of viruses, no one to combat their spread, no one to file criminal charges. These are the phrases that contribute to the speedy decline of civilization. And whoever started them deserves a slow and painful death by swine flu.

1. “Ayt”— Because you’re not black, and you’re not a total idiot. And don’t think for one second you’re cute.

2. “Aylavet”— It’s like Kris Aquino— tolerable on the computer monitor and the cellphone screen but irritating when heard. This takes on a heightened level of annoyance when the speaker animates the expression by prolonging the last syllable. At which point I summon all my powers of restraint to stop strangling speaker with my bare hands. Especially when said speaker happens to be a red-blooded male.

3. “Meh ganun?” - Because the radio station Energy FM 91.5 is among the best reasons for avoiding public transport.

4. “Elow po”— With the optional “poh.” Indicates that the speaker is either a 14-year-old girl who has a pink-wallpapered Friendster account or just a complete dumbass.

5. “Chorva”— Because in 1574 God invented the dictionary. Two and a half months before that, God invented the human brain, which he intended for complex systems of operations like logic, reasoning, analysis, and language. Which means, God did not want all his creatures to speak like they worked the night shift at Reyes Haircutters. If he did, we’d all have naturally bleached, over-gelled hair. That, plus perennially raised collars.

6. “Nownah”— Which is “now na” pulled down to unfathomably moronic depths, but is actually persuasive in specific instances. E.g. “I will bludgeon you until you’re comatose, you stupid idiot. When? Nownah.”

7. “Ayuz”— The bigger schmuck, however, is that record company dork behind Ayuz: The Compilation.

8. “Haller” — God’s way of telling us we’re not reading enough books.

9. “Text-text”— Indicates several things:
a. A certain appointment/ person is not important enough to merit an exact time and place.
b. “We’re so dumb we can’t even make up our minds about which restaurant. You’ll be late? It’s okay. I’ll be late, too.”
b. “Let’s play it by ear. Maybe I’ll feel lazy and I won’t be in the mood to see you.”
c. The improvisational nature of the Filipino temperament. Which is probably explains why we’re the mightiest, most efficient nation on the planet.

10. “OMG"— Marks the completion of our descent from human beings into ants.

CHORVA has its etymology from the Greek word “cheorvamus,” meaning “for lack of the right word to say,” or “in place of anything you want to express but cannot verbalize.”

"Chorva" can be used as:

Noun: "ano" / "kwan" / "or something"

"Ate Glow, kelan yung birthday chorva ni Big Mike?"
"Hoy, Vicky to, whatcha gonna wear ba? The sporty or the chinese chorva mo?"

Adjective: used if you want to be polite.

"Ang chorva naman niyan!"
(So, ano ba? Pangit ba o maganda? Baduy ba or maarte? They will never know what you really mean.)

Verb: can replace any verb

"Chorva lang ng chorva!"

"Chorva" is such an amazing word; it lets you choose your own adventure. At least, you will never be accused of putting words in somebody else's mouth. If you don't have anything to say, or you can't find the right word to say, or you want to say something but you don't know how to say it, just say

CHORVA!

Variations: Chuva, Chenes, Chenelyn

its not mine...got this from a blog...
posted it for the sake of giving meaning to the word chorva.....

...at least kahit papano comic parin ang dating nga mga expressions na to.. kasi dito sa Singapore nakakakulo ng dugo like "I Know! I know!" - ito ang palaging sinasabi ng mga locals dito pag may gusto kang e share sa kanila, hindi kapa tapus mag salita ito na ang maririnig mo. Tinataasan ka talaga ng boses.. Mapa professional man oh hindi sinasabi nila to. Nakakainsulto talagang pakinggan.

Do they say that even to locals? Sometimes we should be careful - malay natin kung customary lang sa kanila yun na walang halong pang-iinsulto. Since it's their country - we should take the initiative to adjust to local customs and expressions....

10 Stupid Expressions That Must Die Soon (of Filipinos) - Page 2 Empty Re: 10 Stupid Expressions That Must Die Soon (of Filipinos)

Post by nomeradona Fri Nov 20, 2009 7:50 pm

this is always part of the evolution of languange. Mapa English, mapa Vietnamese, mapa Pilipino, every year some group of people look on new words to enter in the latest dictionary... "Lobat" is a good example na nabalitang one of the best new Pilipino word. On the other hand, I could feel the frustration. When I watched that GMA7 clip, I think I only managed to understand 10% of the words. So I really feel intimidated...

Let me share what I felt about text speak and acrostics...

I found myself in a very uncomfortable state with LOLz, IMHO, IMO, TFS, Haller, BRB and so on and so forth because i dont understood them. On one side, when i knew their meanings they did sound cool to me, i felt I learned something new.. To make matters worse, I did not notice that I began to use them too.

I guess the same feeling with the slang words above, chorva..chukchuk or what. 10 Stupid Expressions That Must Die Soon (of Filipinos) - Page 2 Icon_biggrin . I havenot encountered them before, i just knew them now.... what do i feel with them?.. did i felt cool about them? They are still "Bading" sound to me as of now..... Will i use them? Depends on the context kung gusto ku sigurung magpatawa, maybe.... dont know..

I guess in the end, some cultures or groups always love to develop their own lingo and they feel proud about it and feel belonging. I remember nung nauso yung radio.. wala pang cell phones nun.. radio like "pencil pushers" (students), "over", "hideout" are cool way to use during that time.... and indeed you feel belong to the group who use them.. you feel being elite even.

no wonder nowadays, nawawala na yung mga malalalim na salita. at kung gagamitin mo yung mga salitang ito, sometimes you will be branded as taga ibang planeta.

in the end its about us, whether you accept it or not. kung di kaya ng buto.. nasa sa yu yun. On the other hand for those who speak it, you have to be mindful that some people are intimidated and even feel "they are not belong". SO if you practice "Respect for Others" you should be mindful with that.. Para din yang nagsalita ka ng kapampangan, or ilokano or bisaya sa forum. Hindi lahat ay Kapampangan, Ilokano, or Bisaya.. those who dont undersatand what is written will definitely feel bad about it.
.
so mga ka CGP be watchful ha!

sa kabilang banda, I hope there will be a new thread, Mga meaning ng mga salitang ito mapa tex speak man or slang, para kaming nasa ibang konteksto ay makaride din..

so Chie umpisahna mo na nga yun....

if we will observed carefully, these 10 stupid expressions are 99% said by the new generation na naging resulta na rin ng evolution ng fashion, technology and culture. Most of these terms originated sa TV & any other media channels.

kung ating titingnan simpleng mga expressions lang to pero pag inisip na mabuti ang pinagmulan at patutunguhan ay talagang nakakabahala.

pareho din eto ng pagiging vocal at liberated ng mga kabataan ngayon. most of them are even bragging on how liberated they are. too proud and yet too naive.

Different faces but same blood.

Siempre liberated ang mga biys eh, anlagay boys lang di ba women?

Seriously now, people specially the oldies does not resent evolution of the language.. the problem lies in one simple question - does it make you proud?

If not then something might be wrong.

hmmm buti nga hindi pa nasasama sa conversation ang LOL eh... imagine niyo, sa halip na tumawa ang isang tao, hihirit ng "lol" tongue

Oo nga pala share ko lang, tungkol dun sa "haller". Ang pagkakaalam ko nanggaling sa super hot Iya Villena yan di ba? The expression is actually one of the weirder effects of the british/aussie accent. They tend to switch "er" and "a/o" at the end of words. Pag naririnig nga sa news ganito eh: "President Obam"er" (Obama) just had the Ide"er" (idea) of handing out the lett"ah" (letter), blah blah..."

So yun lang po, eheh. Weird as the term "haller" sounds, this freakishly alienating term is all over the place.....

.... LOL Very Happy

I know i know = never heard ... ang lagi ko naririnig e un .. DUNNO (un mey tonong nagtatanga-tangahan)
or maybe palagi mo lang inuulit at naiirita na sila kaya binabara ka na lang ng I KNOW I KNOW

i only hear the longer I KNOOOOOWWWW .... pag mey brainstorming kmi at mey mga nagd-disagree sa suggestion ng isa.

alamak is as lightly foul as "f*ck" ..
wah lau eh = just the usual expression of disgust or awe

bkt naman ayaw mo mag adjust? it would be a lot more easier to live here..
andito ka na eh, and i think we should be the one "bending" to have a harmonious relationship with them.
u can only bend to your limit. beyond that, pag dmo na ma-take, u always have the option to leave..

if something doesn't make u happy, leave then move on. life is too short for complaining.

Wireframan,

I think the problem with assimilation is that we acknowledge the offensive expressions by our hosts in our own cultural standards. This is wrong - kung alam mo na na gawi lang nila iyon and that they do that all the time, we can just control our emotions and tell our consciousness "it's their way of pretending to be intelligent, or its just their culture."

Hayaan mo silang pumunta s pilipinas, if they do that again - then tell them it is taboo in our territory.
The secret to success or peaceful living in a foreign land is assimilation - if we do not try our best to have an open mind - sa pinas na ulit bagsak mo. Nice advice - kettle.
