Good Day.

1. vray material>HDRI>drag to environment
2. vray environment>select HDRI>drag to empty slot on vray material.

--- bali baliktaran yung steps... so which is the best and right way?
or their just the same?

thanks in advance po.

Remember there are two (well three) uses for HDRI images in vray:

1. As a Global Illumination Source - via 3dsmax Environment Slot or Vray's Environment Override.
2. It can serve as an automatic environment reflection source (when applied via 3dsmax Environments Slot) and as an alternative reflection/refraction source via Vray's Reflection Override.
3. And oh - you can now use it to map your dome lights ala Image-based Lighting.

Now I have given you the clues - time to do your homework.

NO HDRI
Which is the right way to setup an HDRI? in vray Nohdri

WITH HDRI 3DS MAX'S ENVIRONMENT SLOT >PASTE TO> VRAY METERIAL SLOT
Which is the right way to setup an HDRI? in vray Teahdri3dsmaxenvironmentslottovraym

WITH HDRI VRAY MATERIAL SLOT >PASTE TO> VRAY GI ENVIRONMENT SLOT
Which is the right way to setup an HDRI? in vray Teahdrimateriltogienvironment

WITH HDRI VRAY GI ENVIRONMENT SLOT >PASTE TO > VRAY MATERIAL SLOT

Sir, tingin ko yung may best result yung 3ds max's environment slot to vray material slot.

good day...

sir wrangler,

They're both the same, the only difference is usage. You put the HDR imagery to 3dsmax' Environment Slot to "globally" affect GI and Reflections/Refractions

If you want to use a different background for rendering and would want the GI contribution to come from another HDR imagery, you use the Override Environment Slot of VRAY.

You use the Environment Slot of the material if you want a per material/per object control of the HDRI's contribution.

salamat po.

Imagine Image based lighting (HDRI) as a substitute for your environment. In your first example - the box is filtering and covering the image from being seen by the raytracer (kasi nga tinatakpan sya ng box).

Here's something quite related to how one might use hdri:
