VFX: CONCEPTS: Missile fired from a Modified Apache Helicopter
I would like to document the processes involved in the development of a VFX piece. There really is no standard and each approach might differ from a studio to another. One thing pretty common is the involvement of concept designs. I'd like to start from one.
This scene is part of the sequence of shots my team at Gstyle and Enising did last year for the theatrical release of an old manga from the Legendary Osamu Tezuka.
The requirement was to design and modify an American Apache helicopter, equipt it with a short-ranged air combat missile and allow it to lock-on to a target: a C130 plane.
First task given to us was to create rough designs. Here are some of them courtesy of our concept artists at the Sapporo Studio.
The idea behind concepts is to communicate the action and not just the look. For the design, we were given the freedom to play around without sacrificing an authentic look. For presentation, we give importance to amplifying the idea by including briefs about how each parts might move. Remember that concepts remain as guides - we still have the freedom to improvise or shift away from the original during the modeling or animation process if we find them impossible or something else looks good in motion. You will never really know them unless the scene is staged and the objects are animated.
Next installment will be the Line Tests or Animation Previews that we produced during the development of the particular scene. (hahanapin ko pa po bukas ang mga files.)

thank you for the kind words, it's always a team effort.
Anyone can do it, you just have to try it once for a start.
