Re: Modern design or not?
ang modern ay kabaligtaran ng classical
ang classical ay madetalye at maarte
pero nung start ng 20th century nabuo ang modern architecture kung saan naging mas simple ang mga design ng structures....
ang contemporary at modern ay magkaiba...
contemporary means current architecture

If you can't elaborate on that smug comment you are only confusing the discussion.

Try to google works of Antoni Gaudi. He is famous for his Art Noveau style which emerged after arts and crafts movement in europe...... Art Noveau is considered as modern style of Architecture, even though the elements of that styles are swirling lines, flowerry ornaments, nature, distortion of straight lines and even statues. To sum it all, that style was maarte talaga. It has been glorified as modern architecture because Gaudi creates new elements as stated above different in every architecture style of the past and in his time....Another thing is the Art Deco style, which also happens to be considered as modern Architecture........correct me if i'm wrong?!

Re: Modern design or not?
Just to add up mga sirs..
For me, Modern Architecture, as earlier discussed and seen from the links and resources provided, existed already decades and centuries ago. It is a fact that modern architecture then isn't speaking about the present or nowadays architecture, but simply the evolution of new style or design which became unique and original in it's specific time and birth, may it be in the late 19th or 20th century.
Misconception: the evolution of different architectures each in their own birth were modern at that time and isn't anymore today or even in the later time after their birth. Meaning, all our modern architecture earlier before and today, may not be modern in the next generation?? No, because the earlier modern architecture is still modern today and your modern architecture today may still be considered modern tomorrow. Or in contrary, the consideration of it may still depend on the judgement of the architecture for every generation to come... An introduced modern architecture today, may or may not become classical in the next century and will never end the argumentation.
My conclusion is, the fact that you are able to introduce a new, original and unique idea, it is considered a Modern Architecture, not withstanding or neglecting the use of any materials and forms, and even functions. So we may say, uniqueness/originality in design is Modern Architecture.

Re: Modern design or not?
Modernism is actually based from the concept of Sir Joseph Paxton, who gave birth to what is now considered an international style. The standardization, Modularization and Pre-fabrication of components are some of the innate character of modern architecture [see Crystal Palace]. It is a style that eliminates unuseful decorations and exhibit purity of expression through the use of innovative available materials. It is a style that has closer link between industry and technology.

Re: Modern design or not?
Very interesting topic here. All of the answers above to me are right.
To me Modernism is all about TIME. When you design something that would "respond to the present and future needs". This would include many factors that change like culture, sociology, environment, weather, economics, science and technology ( hence the new materials and construction methods) etc.
While Classicism, if I may, Is designing something, to make our "present respond to what has been done and proven." That is why there is this thing called Neo-Classic, It's a combi of both. I am sure during its era of fame, it was considered modern coz it was the trend or market.
Cheers guys.
