i asked a question in a science board somewhere on the net concerning 2012, and i recieved a fairly informative answer.

my question is...

What is true about 2012?
i've seen a lot of topics in the internet about 2012 like the world will end etc. can you please enlighten me?

The Big 2012 Hoax was created about six years ago. It is the coming together of a few lies, organized by people who know how to organize such hoaxes.

1) "The Mayan calendar ends"
It does not, It merely passes a round figure (just like when our own calendar went from 1999 to 2000). The idea that it ends was invented in a book sold in the 1990s, where a pseudo-scientist pretends to understand the Mesoamerican calendars.

2) "The Mayan calendar is very precise and predicts many events"
It does not. It is merely a day-count calendar (common in astronomy). It "predicts" a precession cycle of approximately 25,625 years (the real cycle is closer to 25,800 years). It is no more precise (and no less precise) than other calendars prepared a thousand years before the Mayan empire culminated (about a thousand years ago).

3) "The Mayans believed in the end-of-the-world or a New Age."
The Mayans left writings where they use their calendar to date events they claimed would occur (on Earth, involving humans) well after the year we call 4000. Obviously, they expected neither the world nor their calendar to end.

4) "Planet X will cause..."
Planet X was invented for the end-of-the-world of June 2003. In the original hoax, Planet X was to cause a global tsunami killing 90% of the world population, with some people saved by spacecraft sent by aliens.
The creators of the hoax had books for sale on how to survive the passage of Planet X.
The Big 2012 Hoax was organized by the same charlatans. They "recycled" their Planet X story, stole ideas from the Nibiru and Nemesis stories (two non-existing celestial bodies that had nothing to do with 2012) and invented the "Ancient Prophesies".

5) "There will be an alignment of..." fill in with your favorite fake 2012 prediction.
The only "alignment" is that of the Winter Solstice (a mathematical point on the ecliptic) with the Galactic equator (a recently created reference system that has nothing to do with the Sun or the ecliptic).
Even better (or worst, depending on your view point), this "alignment" does not occur in 2012. However, it has been distorted into planetary alignments (no special alignments in 2012), the Sun lining up with the Galactic centre (it can't), the Sun crossing the Galactic equator (it does, twice a year, every year)... and so on.

There is also the pre-release hype involving yet another Hollywood end-of-the-world movie. This one is called "2012" even though it really uses the June 2003 scenario (Planet X, global tsunami, chariot-shaped spacecraft) to which was added the "Institute for Human Continuance" (the idea that the government knows but is hiding the information from us); the Mayan calendar was thrown in to justify the title (calling the movie "2003" would not have been as good for marketing).
