i'm new to this genre (birding) so have no base formula yet. using my instinct however i can't afford to waste my shots having motion blur due to wind or the bird's quick movements. so in most of the shots, a safe shutter of 1/200-sec or faster is a must. and having researched about my lens (70-300mm) before, i know that from f8 or smaller will render my subjects sharper due to more dof, so i had to at least stick with it. so with this setting my TTL meter shows 1-stop under, so i had to dial my iso up to 200 (from 100) which gives it a just nice histogram curve of within -1/3EV which is manageable in post since i'm shooting in RAW format.
