First topic message reminder :

Hi guys, Here is my first post for this year 2009. some quality loss due to image compression. Done in 3 weeks of spare time. Ill upload the animation soon. textures are procedural and some are unwrapped painted. Used couple of displacements on the scene.Done in 3dmax, vray and PS on final touches.Just check the high resolution images for a more uncompressed quality. Hope you guys will like it

thanks for the replies guys...i just uploaded the short animation for this which you can find here. the short animation is more of experimenting camera movement, particles and effects in 3dmax and in after effects. The animation has a little compression in quality and size.Took me almost a month to finish this on my spare time since my last post. Done on my desktop machine and a laptop. Rendering time per frame was around 5-10 min per frame. Had a lot of post processing and compositing on this.

thanks sa comment. I dont really know much about su but i think not all kaya ng Su. Like uv Unwraps and motion rigging of camera or track curves. I think sa Su is a more direct and illustrative software and not really geared towards film type of production. Just my observation. And yes gawa po it sa Max and vray and AE.

Saw the anims, ryan - no comment yet except for the cams. There's something weird with the cam hand held effect - perhaps its the noise or the axis placement of the noise, did you separate the noise movement for the cam and target? BTW, since you're compositing in AE - sometimes it helps to do the position wiggle in there so you could always re-edit without much trouble.

One tip for explosions: Add a single frame whiteout when the rocket or asteroid gets in contact with the ground.

Nevertheless its refreshing to see you do some non traditional archi stuff! Looking forward to more of your post.

I know you aren't asking for comments but here's something to consider just in case you are thinking of doing part 2.


1. The tip of the asteroid (the bright white) is too concentrated, try to shorten it a bit or allow it to fade a long the trail

2. Add more length to the rear smoke trail and let the density fade out.

3. You might want to add a bright attenuated light on the tip of the asteroid - burning hot objects tend to produce illumination around its immediate surroundings.

3. Since its is hot and burning - you might want to add heat waves - you can do this by using a simple particle point render as a displacement map in after effects.

4. rather than use a 4 point filter (cross filter) a bright anamorphic flare might make this look much better.

5. fume details quite large - this makes the scene look like miniature.

6. Last scene, If the wind blows the bits to the left - then I'd expect the fire to lean on the same direction. Add bits of orangey self illuminated particle dots to simulate the firey bits you'd see when burning wood or combustibles.

*thanks for pointing out some things on the scene. Apart from time that i spent on this (roughly less than a month and roughly less than 2 weeks on spare time just to test some effects) i know i had lot to consider since vfx is a whole new world for me. First, the camera was rigged manually in 3dmax since i dont have any available video cam corder to do such camera tracking i know there are couple of important points that needed to be fixed. It was actually multiple helpers with different attributes one of them was having a noise movement and others were manually keyframed then linked back to the original cam.So along the process i know its not that perfect, but still had to give the process a try.

*Next would be the smoke and asteroid simulation. It was done in particles and afterburn, i had to increase step size so as to have a quick render time which will of course give you less detail on the overall quality of the simulation. vertex was right about putting more trail at the tail of the asteroid, which i failed to add on the final composite. My actual simulation angle was correct but when i rendered with AF it turned out to be odd since the asteroid is heading towards the cam. i Know it had to do with the angle. particles generated was already over 1000 at birth and travelled a lot of distance to reach that ground so i had to make it travel shorter so as to provide lesser particle generation. ONE thing that i really failed to do in the whole composite was the illumination of the whole asteroid before it hits the ground. About the heat waves , the whole composite was already crashing on my machine considering the files are sequenced uncompressed pngs and with lots of effects and color manipulations so i was constrained couple of elements along the way, i know it would look good with the waves though a different pass and a displacement effect in AE could provide a more convincing effect, ill remember this on next time though.
Fume details were actually generated through the noise size and density but i need to make sacrifices on details for AF in order to achieve a more faster rendering since it will be very far and added a lot of blurs along the way i was thinking it might do the job, but thanks vertex for pointing it out.

* for the last shot, i did add some random particle motions for the burned objects. It was small horizontal polygons with motion blurs in it. Im not sure if it was convincing but i know i had to add it.
