Unlike the rest, I'll be gently honest. It sucks bigtime.
Why?
Because YOU chose it to be.
First, think of me as a recruiter or some guy at HR making the big decisions on who gets the privilege of joining my awesome, source of envy, hi-end, hi-paying, prestigious kathang-isip Animation Studio.
If you know that your weakness is animation - DO NOT EVER PUT IT THERE!!
I repeat, do not ever put it there! Unless you want to call more attention to what you cannot do and will never be able to do.
Only the best in your demo reel. Put only the best work. I do not care what you did 10 years ago what I want to see is what you are able to do now and what you may be able to accomplish given training and the right equiptments.
If your forte is modeling, show your strength by highlighting your modeling skills, I'd prefer a wireframe and a textured rendering. I do not care much abotu the flashy backgrounds. I'd even prefer a single color so I could see your edge loops and the silhouttes or even the textures you made yourself.
If your forte is Archiviz, show your best scene renderings - categorize them to show your other skills and do not mix them unless you have a good story why.
If you simply slap them one after the other - I would assume you are trying to show me a storyline and if I do not pick them up after watching - I'd be made to believe you are a lousy storyteller and I will not be interested in hiring you.
If you can use 3d trackers at least tell me where you used in the reel if it isn't obvious.
Lastly, choose your target company - if I am an animation studio, I will probably give your animation reel the thumbs down, but if I am an arkiviz studio then I might give you a second chance.
Treat your reel like your it's you on your sunday getup, it's your door to goodness, it is your reflection, it tells quite a lot about your personality.
So kung pangit ang reflection, pangit din ang kalalabasan.
Goodluck.
PS. Do not put loud music, I turn them off anyways.
Since this is a draft, you have no excuse not to improve on the points I mentioned. And here's some visual guide to ungodliness:
