My computer works best with direct3d, others work best with open gl and so on. you will find this while working on some of your models. Here some event that will address the need to shift from graphic display.
- sometimes while on modelling, its hard to shift from different views.
- sometimes models and textures dont show the way it should be.
- sometimes by just opening a certain files, 3dmax program crashes
- sometimes, just by dragging the models, the program suddenly off.

To get rid on this, we shift from different drivers. Its more on technical, and to answer your question here are some already posted topic on the internet.

Summary

  • OpenGL
    runs on most operating systems, while Direct 3D, as part of the DirectX
    suite is specifically designed for Windows platforms (PC and consoles)
  • Direct3D
    addresses game performance; DirectX targets also this market, but its
    other APIs enhance sound rendering and provide media support too; OpenGL
    is a more general API which is mainly targeted at professional graphics
    first, but also computer games;
  • OpenGL featured from the early start a hardware accelerator, while Direct3D responded to this need with its 7th version.
