Arch. & Design-Glass
One of Mental ray's advantage is it has material presets, very handy if you are just starting out and learning the ropes. There are two groups of presets, first is the Arch & Design and second is the Pro materials. Here is a small guide for A&D glass.
A full Arch & Design guide can be found at http://www.mrbluesummers.com.
There are four glass material available. I normally, for architectural visualizations e.g. windows, use either preset 1 or 2.
I DO NOT adjust the default setting of the material. I only add a noise for reflection variation.
1.) Glass (Thin Geometry) - as described, it's for thin (think plane) geometries.
2.) Glass (Solid Geometry) - for solids.
3.) Glass (Physical) - for solids
4.) Frosted Glass (Physical) - as the name implies.
Now for making it look convincingly "realistic" like this example
Just add a Noise map in the bump slot of the material.
Adjust the size as needed.
Glass IS reflective. Place a plane behind the camera with an image you want to reflect. Or 3D trees, cars, buildings if your PC can handle the "abuse". More in-depth explanation can be seen at BOKKIN's vray glass tutorial.
