On the contrary, the sun size multiplier will have no effect whatsoever with regards to the density of the shadows. All it does, is - blur or unblur your shadows. The bigger the size, the blurrer shadows become.
Density of the shadows are dependent on the location/angle of the sun and the strenght of your GI solution. If your GI is bright enough, it will brighten up the shadowy portions of the images, if the GI solution is dark, then the shadows will generally be dark.
For more control on the shadow density, I'd use a regular light and lower the shadow density there.
You can also control brightness or darkness by changing the default values of the Color Mapping Multiplier, burn value or gamma but it has a general tonal effect on the image.

While this isn't a bad suggestion, it doesn't help solve the ACTUAL PROBLEM.
This is intrinsic in all problem solving tasks. One must attack the source of the problem so that similar hurdles can be met and fixed the next time. So why do I think the good workaround creates more problem than actually solving the source of the problem?
By creating a dome light, you are also adding illumination to areas that are already "Good enough". By creating a dome light, yo u are adding softer shadows which might change the current "look" of the image.
Again, there are many ways to attack a particular problem in max, the standards by which one should choose them is the number of additional tasks (tweaks) that would result from the workaround, solution or fixing techniques.
If you could mimic the sun using a standard light, I'll go for it. But thats me.
Re: My shadows on my renders are too dark
change the color mapping values - the multipliers as vertex suggested.
IMO adding a dome light will only increase your render times.
if you can do away with it adjust the curves in post (as long as the dark areas dont get too noisy or splotchy)

check mo yung environment light mo baka disabled, hinaan mo yung intensity nang vray sun then lakasan mo yung intensity ng environment light or g.i.pwede rin ipost process mo sa photoshop "shadow/highlight" effect.
