Basically max files are not downgradable.

Try the fbx import export

Actually, my good 'ol friend bokkins just told me that.... "just export your higher version max file in .3ds then import it to a lower max version... Kasi talagang ganyan na talaga ang max. Di pwede buksan sa mababang version ang file na nasa mataas na version.... Ain't that sad

With 3ds - you lose all controllers. FBX allows you to bake animations ,export cameras as well as your UVs..

hindi talaga pwede ako nga naipit lahat files ko max2008, hindi nako maka gamit ng lower version ulit. Sad
