L'invasion du Caca Men

Hey CG peeps,

Vacation ko na rin, may time na ulit para gumawa ng personal works. Ngayon ko lang naexplore ang After Effects CS3, nakakatuwa gamitin yung puppet tool. O_O Ito, tinest ko yung feature sa mga drawings ko sa Nintendo DS:

Hahahah, salamat po! Sinadya kong creepy yung atmosphere...nakakatuwang drawing + foreboding music, para surreal rin ang dating haha. May naprepare na rin kasi akong story nito na medyo horror. Itong video na 'to test lang ng look. Thanks again!

Hahahahah, salamat dude torvicz!!! Nakakalito nga motion tracking sa AE pag umpisa. Pero madali lang talaga! Sobrang powerful at useful na feature. O_O Sige sige...tutorial is on the way!

HERE IS THE TUTORIAL AS REQUESTED

The Making of L'invasion du CacaMen

note: AE CS3 or above is needed for this tutorial. Lower versions won't work with this tutorial since we will be using the Puppet Tool which is only available for later versions. Also you will need basic knowledge of AE before you begin.

To start with, create a new composition and import your videos/pictures to be used in the scene.



Drag the files into the composition. Hide the background for the meantime. We will be masking our character at the next step.



Select your character layer then click on the Pen tool (or press G). To mask, just click and trace the outline of your character (think spline creation in 3dsmax).



It should look like this:



Now for the fun part! We're now going to 'rig' our character using AE's puppet tool. Click the Puppet Pin Tool as shown on the image and start clicking on the joints of your character. (The less the better)



When you're done you should be able to move your character using the 'joints' you've created. Cool huh!

Now, animating the every joint manually would be very hard and time-consuming.Thankfully I found a quick and dirty way to animate the them. Just press and hold Ctrl while dragging and moving a joint. AE will detect the movements you've made and will apply keyframes to the joint automatically. Try it!


We're finished with our character. Hide it for now and show the background. Here's the hard part. Motion Tracking!!! Don't let it scare you. I'm here to help. Mkay?



First things first. Go to Layer>New>Null Object. This is an important part and shouldn't be missed. The Null is where we're going to put our tracked position.



Double click on the background at the timeline and change the Workspace to: Motion Tracking. See image below:



Under the Tracker Controls, make sure Motion Target is set to our Null object (Null1). Click Track Motion. A small box should appear on the video. Position this box (click n' drag) to where you want the character to appear in the video. (Objects' corners/edges work best). In my case, I positioned my box to the low corner of the wall. When all is set, click the play button on the Tracker Controls to begin tracking.


It should look something like this after tracking. Click on the Apply Button now to transfer the tracked position to our Null Object. (Again, Motion Target should be set to: Null 1 or whatever your Null object's name is.) A dialog box will appear. Make sure it's set to 'X and Y', then press OK. Et voila! You have now successfully tracked your video.



We're almost done! Unhide your character layer now. Scale and position it on the video. When you're finished, set your character layer's Parent to the Null Object.



Play the video. Your character is now tracked into your background! Congratulations!

That's basically how I did all of the 3 shots. To make it look more realistic, I added a bit of gaussian blur, levels, and color correction on the character to match the background. For the reflection on the 1st shot, I just copied the character layer, inverted it and set its opacity to about 30. If some things are unclear, don't hesitate to ask. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
