Primary use would be conversion of sequential images of step exposures to HDRI. I only use it to convert mirrored ball images I took myself to Latitude/longtitude for use in MAX/Vray as environment maps, or as IBLs.

Re: LIGHTING: Using Low Dynamic Ranges (LDRs)
Some people might ask, "What is LDR?"
Well, its your typical 8-bit images, targas, tiffs, pngs etc.
It does not offer the same illumination range you'd get from HDRIs but nevertheless usuable. Unless you aren't animating the intensities - LDRs do work fine for most puposes.
Next series would be on how to mimic or extend the brightness of the LDRs.

Thanks nomer - I'm already lelong -The young ones have all the freshest ideas and energies. But they do not have the experience. If we mix the two we'd have the best concoction, - I think that's what we all need.
I'm happy that you feel inspired - that's my battery - without it, its hard to cook all these ideas.
See you around!
